Understanding Gout

Red Swollen Painful Big Toe Joint

What Is Gout?

Gout is a common type of arthritis that occurs when uric acid crystals accumulate in the joints. These sharp crystals cause intense pain, swelling, and inflammation, often resulting in episodes known as gout flares.

While the condition primarily affects the joints, it can also interfere with a person’s daily activities and overall quality of life. Most gout flares occur suddenly, commonly targeting the big toe, but they can develop in other joints such as the ankles, knees, or wrists.

What Causes Gout?

Gout develops due to an imbalance in the production and removal of uric acid in the body. Normally, the body breaks down substances called purines, found in certain foods like red meat, seafood, and alcohol, into uric acid, which is eliminated mostly through the urine.  However, when the body produces too much uric acid or struggles to filter it out, the excess forms crystals in the joints.

Apart from diet, several risk factors can contribute to gout, including:

  • A diet high in purines

  • Excessive alcohol consumption

  • Health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, or kidney disease.

  • Family history which may increase genetic predisposition

  • Certain medications, such as diuretics or drugs used to manage high blood pressure

The Impact of Gout on Your Health

Gout doesn’t just cause pain during flares; unmanaged gout can lead to long-term complications. Repeated flares may cause significant joint damage, reducing mobility and affecting daily life.

Additionally, gout often coexists with other conditions like cardiovascular issues, kidney disease, or metabolic syndromes, further highlighting the importance of proactive care.
